In this period of history, there were no limits on plastic production. Plastic was often used to produce non-functional items, such as "keychains" and children's toys. In the century this charm was created, humans had produced over 24.9 billion tonnes of virgin plastic. Approximately 60% of these plastics ended up in landfill. These landfills are still with us today.
