My mother took me to see the last whale. There was a ship that went out into the Great Pacific, sat in the water and waited.

I only saw a glimpse of the whale, far from the tiny boat. I was cold and bored and didn't understand why we had to look.

The whale died a few years later, much earlier than it should've.

Scientists tried to record its final song, but it would not sing. It hadn't sung for many years.
